Narendra Damodardas Modi (born 17 September 1950) is an Indian politician who has served as the prime minister of India since 2014. Modi was the chief minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 and is the Member of Parliament (MP) for Varanasi. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a right-wing Hindu nationalist paramilitary volunteer organisation. He is the longest-serving prime minister outside the Indian National Congress.
Modi was born and raised in Vadnagar in northeastern Gujarat, where he completed his secondary education. He was introduced to the RSS at the age of eight. At the age of 18, he was married to Jashodaben Modi, whom he abandoned soon after, only publicly acknowledging her four decades later when legally required to do so. Modi travelled around India for two years and visited a number of religious centres before returning to Gujarat. There, he became a full-time worker for the RSS. After the state of emergency was declared by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, he went into hiding. The RSS assigned him to the BJP in 1985 and a series of BJP and RSS posts culminated in his assignment as the partyโs general secretary in 1998.
Modi helped organise the BJPโs campaign in the 1995 and 1998 Gujarat legislative assembly elections, and was a major campaign figure in the 2009 general elections for the Lok Sabha (lower house of Indiaโs Parliament). Modi was named the BJPโs candidate for chief minister in the 2001 Gujarat legislative assembly election, winning a seat in a February 2002 by-election. He succeeded the incumbent BJP chief minister, Keshubhai Patel, whose administration had faced public ire after the governmentโs mishandling of relief efforts following the 2001 Gujarat earthquake. Modi was sworn in as the chief minister of Gujarat in October 2001. He was elected from Maninagar in the 2002 Gujarat legislative assembly election, and retained the seat in elections in 2007 and 2012. During his tenure, Gujaratโs economy grew rapidly, but his administration was criticised for its handling of the 2002 Gujarat riots and its human development indices. Modi led the BJP in the 2014 Indian general election which resulted in an outright majority for the BJP, the first for any party since 1984, and the first time a non-Congress party won a majority on its own. Modiโs administration invoked the revocation of Article 370 of the Constitution of India, which granted autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated it into the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh. His party won the 2019 Indian general election and increased its majority in the Lok Sabha. In his second term, Modiโs administration passed the Citizenship Amendment Act, which resulted in widespread protests across the country and was criticised as discriminating against Indiaโs Muslim minority. The COVID-19 pandemic had serious negative economic effects in India, and the government was criticised for its handling of the migrantsโ crisis during the subsequent lockdown. In the 2024 general election, the BJP lost its majority and Modi formed a coalition government with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) after the alliance won the election.
Under Modiโs tenure, India has experienced democratic backsliding, or the weakening of democratic institutions, processes, and norms. Modiโs administration has used state power to target critics and human rights, including through press censorship, politically motivated arrests, and violence against Muslims. The economy has also slowed and unemployment increased, although infrastructure development increased. Modi has received consistently high approval ratings in India. Modi has been recognised with national and international awards for contributions to diplomacy and development.
