Donald John Trump (born June 14, 1946) is an American politician, media personality, and businessman who served as the 45th president of the United States from 2017 to 2021 and is currently serving as the 47th president since 2025. Trump graduated from the Wharton School in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in economics. The son of Fred Trump, a Bronx and Queens real estate developer, he was president of his family's real estate business starting in 1971 and renamed it the Trump Organization. He expanded it into a multi-billion-dollar empire with holdings in real estate, entertainment, and licensing, and was a celebrity due to his extravagant lifestyle, high-profile relationships, and role hosting the reality TV show The Apprentice from 2004 to 2015. From the 1980s onward, Trump's wealth and fame grew, but his businesses faced multiple bankruptcies. He also co-produced the Miss Universe pageant from 1996 to 2015.
Trump entered politics with his 2016 presidential campaign, which was characterized by populist positions on trade and immigration and his incendiary rhetoric. Defeating Hillary Clinton in the general election, he became the oldest and wealthiest person to win the presidency, as well as the first without prior military or government experience. His presidency was marked by protectionist trade policies, deregulation, tax cuts for individuals and corporations, attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, the appointment of three Supreme Court justices who formed a conservative majority, and a general rejection of multilateralism as he withdrew the U.S. from several international agreements. Trump downplayed the COVID-19 pandemic, promoted misinformation about unproven treatments, and was criticized for an allegedly slow federal response. After he lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden, Trump made false claims of widespread electoral fraud and attempted to overturn the results, culminating in the January 6 attack on the Capitol by his supporters. Trump was impeached twice by the House of Representativesβfirst in 2019 over abuse of power and obstruction of Congress related to Ukraine, and again in 2021 for incitement of insurrectionβbut was acquitted by the Senate both times.
After leaving office, Trump remained the dominant figure in the Republican Party and campaigned for the 2024 presidential election, securing the nomination after winning a majority of primaries. Despite being convicted of 34 felony counts in the hush money trial and facing other indictments (later dropped or delayed), he defeated Kamala Harris in the general election, becoming the second president (after Grover Cleveland) to win nonconsecutive terms, the first convicted felon to win, and the second to win the presidency while losing the popular vote twice. In his second term starting January 20, 2025, Trump has focused on mass deportations, high tariffs, and federal workforce reductions, while facing numerous lawsuits and criticisms for authoritarian tendencies. Trump has been involved in numerous lawsuits in his business, personal, and political life. He paid settlements in the Trump University fraud case and was found liable for sexual abuse and defamation against writer E. Jean Carroll in 2023. In 2024, he was ordered to pay $355 million for fraudulent business practices by the Trump Organization. Trump has five children from three marriages and 10 grandchildren. His current wife is Melania Trump, a former model. He has made numerous false or misleading public statements and promoted conspiracy theories. His provocative use of Twitter (now X) was a hallmark of his public communication style.
Trump has received numerous honors, including the Ellis Island Medal of Honor (1986), induction into the Gaming Hall of Fame (1995), a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (2007), and foreign awards such as Saudi Arabia's Order of Abdulaziz al-Hariri (2017) and Israel's Liberty coin (2018). Time magazine named him Person of the Year in 2016. An avid golfer and wrestling fan, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013. Trump is known for his distinctive communication style, including the catchphrase "You're fired!" and terms like "fake news." His net worth is estimated at $7.5 billion as of 2025, though he has disputed lower figures. His political movement, Trumpism, emphasizes nationalism, opposition to illegal immigration, and skepticism of global alliances.
